There used to be a Metal scene in Texas. Some may argue that there is still a metal scene in Texas, but those of us who grew up in the 1980's know better. Sure, there are Metal bands out there. Many good ones, to be sure. They have their loyal followers who go to every show. They play to crowds of 10 people on a Tuesday night at the Backroom. They put out demos and struggle to find a label interested enough to finance their CD. Just like the old days. Right? ...Wrong!
Scene - an area or sphere of activity, current interest, etc.: the fashion scene.
What Metal in Texas today lacks is a scene. It lacks a cohesion that is vital to the growth and development of any good Metal band. Central Texas had that scene in the mid 80's. Of course even at the time there was criticism that not enough people supported the scene and the bands within it. But it did exist. You could go to any show at the Ritz Theater in Austin or Cameo Theater in San Antonio and see the same group of kids. It didn't really matter who was playing any particular night. People were there to support the scene. Whether it was to see the mighty WatchTower or the not so mighty Syranax people came out to support Texas Metal.
Our primary goal at TMU will be to explore that scene of the mid 1980's. The bands, the shows, the clubs, the fans. It was a great time and one that should not be forgotten in the annals of Metal history.
Our secondary focus here at TMU will be on Texas Metal in its present form. One band surprised everyone in the past year by coming out of semi-retirement. Of course, I'm referring to Austin legends WatchTower who are now reportedly recording the most anticipated Texas Metal release of the past decade. If it's good, Metal, and from Texas; we'll cover it here at TMU.
